Course Description

This course will ensure you understand the application and documentation used in line with WORKSAFE Approved Code of Practice (ACOPS) Management and Removal of Asbestos. You will learn how to safely remove more than 10m2 of non-friable asbestos and manage asbestos-related risks. The practical element will include the removal of non-friable asbestos (assumed) according to the ACOPS and Asbestos Regulations 2016. This course is developed for people who want to apply for a Class B removal licence, undertake Class B removal work or become a Class B asbestos supervisor.

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the legal responsibility of PCBU holding an Asbestos Removal Licence and describe the range of safety procedures to follow when asbestos is present.
  • Contribute to and use documentation in line with New Zealand regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of asbestos uses and health hazards.
  • Select tools, equipment, and respiratory and other personal protective equipment that match job requirements to carry out tasks, and check them for serviceability. Rectify or report faults before commencement.
  • Complete an Asbestos Removal Control Plan (ARCP) and have it readily available on-site.
  • Prepare for non-friable asbestos removal.
  • Identify non-friable ACM to be removed, referring to the asbestos records or following clarification by the supervisor as required and according to workplace requirements.
  • Identify and implement signage and barricade requirements to delineate the work area.
  • Identify materials and equipment required for removal of ACM from the project site, and check and prepare them for operation.
  • Prepare asbestos removal area and removal site. Describe and carry out the controls and actions to be taken at the end of a work period or upon the completion of work.
  • Identify and implement requirements from the ARCP to isolate the removal site safely and notify affected parties within limits of own responsibility.
  • Carry out non-friable asbestos removal process and comply with territorial authority requirements for disposal.
  • Carry out decontamination process of the work area, tools and workers.
  • Clean, decontaminate, check, and maintain plant, tools, and equipment and remove them from the work area, and store them according to manufacturer recommendations.

Entry Criteria

SiteSafe (NZ), or other similar proprietary health and safety induction certification recognised in New Zealand; or demonstration of equivalent knowledge and skills in health and safety in the construction industry.

Numeracy and Literacy: To complete the assessments, all students must be able to write, speak, and understand basic English.
