Course Description

This course is designed to demonstrate the requirements when working with Class B asbestos for example drilling or cutting a hole for electrical or plumbing work, or the removal of less than 10m2 of Class B asbestos. The course covers preparing the asbestos work site, the decontamination process and disposal of asbestos waste. (includes practical sessions).

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the legal responsibility of PCBU while working with asbestos and describe the range of safety procedures to follow when asbestos is present.
  • Contribute to and use documentation in line with New Zealand regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of asbestos uses and health hazards.
  • Prepare for non-friable asbestos removal.
  • Identify and implement signage and barricade requirements to delineate the work area.
  • Identify materials and equipment required for removal of ACM from the project site, and check and prepare them for operation.
  • Prepare asbestos removal area and removal site. Describe and carry out the controls and actions to be taken at the end of a work period or upon the completion of work
  • Isolate the removal site safely and notify affected parties within the limits of their own responsibility.
  • Carry out a non-friable asbestos removal process and comply with territorial authority requirements for disposal.
  • Carry out the decontamination process of the work area, tools and workers.
  • Clean, decontaminate, check, and maintain plant, tools, and equipment and remove them from the work area, and store them according to manufacturer recommendations.

Entry Criteria

Numeracy and Literacy: To complete the assessments, all students must be able to write, speak, and understand basic English.

Students must be able to kneel on the floor to perform CPR functions. If you have students with physical limitations, please get in touch with us to discuss.
