Course Description

People credited with this course can identify and describe legislative rights and responsibilities for workplace health and safety, describe the systems approach to workplace health and safety, describe the principles of health and safety risk assessment, and explain how risks and hazards are defined in the HSWA. Students will, by completing a risk assessment tool in the course, practically need to apply health and safety risk assessment to a job role based on regulatory requirements and industry good practice.

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Identify and describe legislative rights and responsibilities for workplace health and safety.
  • Describe the principles of health and safety risk assessment.
  • Apply health and safety risk assessment to a job role in accordance with regulatory requirements and industry good practice.
  • Describe the systems approach to workplace health and safety.
  • Explain how risks and hazards are defined in the HSWA.
  • Identify hazards in the workplace using a hazard identification procedure/tools example job safety analysis, area analysis, behaviour analysis, standard operating procedures, safe work methods.
  • Assess risks in the workplace (Risk Matrix).
  • Identify and apply methods to control, monitor and review risk in the workplace.

Entry Criteria

Numeracy and Literacy: To complete the assessments, all students must be able to write, speak, and understand basic English.
